The pendulum

The regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia in Germany have concluded during the weekend and the anti immigration parties have gathered the majority of votes. Voters have spoken about their main concerns, and in Europe these days, and perhaps the world, the biggest issue is (illegal) immigration. Little by little, the tolerance of open borders, but above all, its unwelcome consequences (violence, economic costs, unemployment) is giving way to the opposite forces, like a pendulum, whereby Europe may soon be governed by right wing governments that will oppose these movements, and if history is any guide, the transition will not be peaceful. Nationalism is on the rise. Illegal Immigration is an important issue in the U.S. as well, to the point it is affecting the way unemployment is calculated. The trend seems to be pointing towards hard lines on globalization, free movement of goods and services and people.
